Whimsical Flowers in Watermedia free workshop March 19

Come paint & draw and take a break from winter gloom. Create bright and playful art on paper, canvas, yupo or in your art journal using a mixed media method. FREE but supplies required. (Part of the free Friday Open Art Night Meetups.)

Limited to 10 artists. REGISTRATION REQUIRED
Register through Meetup (accounts on Meetup are free) or email sharongiles@gmail.com
Pandemic protocols such as masks and social distancing required. Age 17+ only.

We’ll start by slopping thin paint on the surface of your choice and create a bright mess. A small size like 11×14 is good since we only have a couple of hours and need to think of drying time (we do have hair dryers.) Note: if you want to do two at the same time, you can let one dry while working on the other, although you won’t be able to finish two.

Then we’ll use intuitive drawing to create your composition, Lines are good — don’t be afraid to show your lines since we’re not going for realism. Weird and whimsical are what we’re looking for. You can bring ideas to inspire you. If you draw like a child, you’re ahead of the game.

Then we’ll use the magic of negative painting for the background to define the flowers and foliage. Next add more paint and drawing as needed. Keep critiquing your painting and playing until it’s done.

Supplies needed:
Surface: watercolor paper, mixed media paper, canvas, yupo or art journal. 11×14 is a good size.
Watermedia: acrylic, watercolor, ink etc. Bring a range of colors, but be sure to bring some white also. Transparent hues are helpful.
Drawing media: pencils, wc pencils, markers, etc. Or you can draw with paint — but remember, lines are part of the design.
Other: apron, paper towels, water container, palette or paper plate, small and large brushes (a foam brush is good for wetting the surface.)
