Fractured Sanctum attempts to capture experiences that break the solitude and safety of a person’s physical, mental, or emotional attributes. The sanctum – a personal, even sacred place – sustains fractures through trauma of the physical or emotional nature, or from the infection of mental diseases, many of which come on suddenly, viciously, and in some cases, predictably. Such experiences reveal unseen facets of an individual. The event of the fracture is a very personal one, and cannot be fully understood from a strictly singular perspective. Nearly all of these pieces are based either on personal experiences or on the experiences of individuals.

Fractured Sanctum utilizes iridescent and interference paints in such a way that viewers must move around the pieces in order to see the colors shift and change right before their eyes. This serves to parallel the perception toward a person whose sanctum has been rent, as the cognizance of a fracture is better understood when viewed from multiple vantage points.

Artist Bio:

Kathleen Ramirez is a Texas-based artist and works primarily in printmaking, painting, and light installation. She received her BA in Art with a focus in Printmaking from the University of Dallas, and she intends to continue on to earn her MFA in the near future. Kathleen currently serves as the Chair of Programs and Social Media Director for the Texas Visual Arts Association, and continues to exhibit her work around the DFW area, continually exploring the human mind, consciousness, and experience through light, color, and contrasts.
