Irving Art Association presents the award winners at the 2019 Annual Members Awards Show.

2019 marks the 64th year of the Irving Art Association and its annual exhibitions. This year 37 IAA members are displaying art in the exhibit, with a total of 101 pieces of art and photography.

Participating artists: Hugh Adams, Utsav Adhibari, Tina Alvarez, Helen Bailey, David Blow, Ryan Cockerham, Terry Cockerham, Ruben Contreras, Steve Danner, Juliana Garcia, Sharon Giles, Jene Gravley, Matthew Grennell, Jane Kahler, Susan Kindley, Jean Knauber, Sudeep Kumar, Sheliah Lonian, Vandana Mehta, Susan Murray, Don O’Bannon, Quentin Ochs, Junanne Peck, Trish Poupard, Madhu Prabhu, Rebecca Prince, Robert Prince, Angela Renee, Stephen Riella, Ann Rowley, Seema Saleemi, Bess Salomon, Stephen Schlarb, Dawn Secord, Behnaz Sohrabian, Zakehia Uscanga, and Mary Anne Whittle.

$930 in prizes was awarded at the Reception on June 9th by exhibit co-chair Sharon Giles and juror Ann Eckstrom. Immediately before the Reception, a major thunderstorm knocked out power to parts of Irving, including IAA’s Gallery at the Jaycee Park Center for the Arts. Though the gallery was mostly dark, we compensated by holding smartphone flashlight gallery tours. The awards presentation was held in the smaller west gallery since the lighting was better.

Reception photos will be posted soon on the IAA Photo Album.

Juror’s StatementAnn Eckstrom

I am impressed with the artworks submitted for this exhibition.  I spent considerable time looking at the works hanging on these walls, to really see the qualities of each work.   Choosing prizes was difficult and I wish that there had been even more awards available.  I love the idea of adding a Challenge category that runs through each section and I am very happy to be able to give those awards.

As a juror, I look for a number of attributes, some seemingly contradictory.  I look for skills and professionalism, but also spirited whimsy and immediacy.  I also hope to find works where the artist strived for a result that was not easy, one that led them to grow as an artist.  I look for a new concept or a very well handled traditional one.

The best of show, by David Blow, as well as all the top prizes, fulfilled my hope to see good, new ideas and well-crafted artworks.  I appreciate the chance to spend time viewing and thinking about the works in this show
