April 17th IAA Meeting – Teta Smith demo on Abstraction

The April IAA Members Meeting will be held on the 3rd Tuesday evening, April 17 at 7pm. (The  gallery is closed on the 4th Tuesday for city maintenance this month.)

It will feature artist Teta Smith, who will give a demonstration on creating abstract paintings. In her words: “Have you ever wanted to know easy ways to start an abstract painting? Come to the meeting to find out. It will be either a fun, Abstract Demo or a complete failure. If it’s a failure, you’ll learn what not to do which is valuable as well. We’ll talk about inspiration, the 4 C’s, design, and guidelines and try to have fun in the process. You’ll leave with a handout that unlocks the quandary of where to begin an abstract painting.”

Doors open at 6:30 pm and the Meeting starts at 7:00 pm at the Jaycee Park Center for the Arts in Irving. Guests are welcome.  Directions.

Artists, don’t forget to bring your entry for the Artist of the Month competition. We will also have a Silent Auction of art supplies.

About the Artist: TETA SMITH

Teta Smith, owner of Teta Smith Studio, paints luminescent contemporary paintings in watercolor, acrylic, collage, and oil with cold wax.

“I create to involve the viewer by expressing emotions and intangible concepts, supported by strong design. My paintings take me to places that I can’t get to verbally, and convey so much that I can’t express in any other way. Phrases, brief comments, scripture or a scene, can touch me deeply and I feel compelled to paint it.”

Teta enjoys weaving in symbolism and avoids photo realism in her work, preferring the sort of elusive quality that prompts a closer look and viewer interpretation. Her love of color was rewarded when 3 of her paintings were featured in the book Confident Color by Nita Leland. “Teaching is so rewarding”says Teta. She teaches all levels of Watermedia, Collage and oil painting classes in her studio inThe Shops at Willow Bend.

Teta is an Associate member of National Watercolor Society, a Member of Southwestern Art Society, Richardson Civic Art Society, Art FocusXC and Collage Visual Arts. Over the years her work has been accepted and won numerous awards in juried exhibitions. She is a frequent workshop coordinator, demo artist and juror.
