Juror’s Statement

Being an artist is one of the craziest things a person can choose to do. We buy expensive supplies, practice our skills for hours at a time, and dig into the depths of our being to communicate ideas in one concise image, object or experience.  We know we will not be fully understood, but we do it anyway – we have to.

Creating art in the security of your own creative space is one thing.  Putting it on the walls of a gallery, knowing it will be seen and judged by others takes a certain level of bravery and very thick skin.  I know that as a juror I could not possibly grasp the amount of work, thought and deliberation that went into each work of art.  I found myself wishing I could have conversations with each of you to help me understand your ideas and your process better.   However, I did spend time with each piece of work and used my experiences as an artist and educator to form my selections.

Visual Appeal:  I am attracted to art that says, “Come closer.” This could be due to striking contrast, extreme detail, intentional simplicity, beauty, strangeness or surprise.  Art that makes you do a double-take.  Art that makes you question the process, media, technique or ideas.  Art that is much more than what you see on the surface at first glance.

Quality: Craftsmanship and technical skill are important.  Many of the works that received awards showed great care and mastery of the selected media.  Space planning/design are also important to effective art– take charge of what your audience sees and how their eyes move around the art work.  The best of these works did this. As a colorist, the clarity, layering, mixing and juxtaposition of color is a very important aspect to many of the awarded works.

Meaning and personal expression:  Excellent art doesn’t just answer “what” and “how,” but also “why.”  I sought to recognize the ability to communicate ideas in a unique way, and leave the viewer asking their own questions.  This is often what determined which works received awards over another one that may have also had the same visual appeal or quality.

My thanks to all of you at the Irving Art Association and to Sharon Giles for selecting me as this year’s juror.  It is an honor to be able to be surrounded by fantastic art and to be able to share my thoughts with you.   Congratulations on a beautiful show!

I leave you all with the challenge to continue to push yourself creatively.  Do the unexpected – things that make you feel just a little out of control.  Ruffle some feathers. Push some boundaries.  Expand your definition of beauty.  Go beyond two dimensions.  Make lots and lots and lots of art.  Enjoy the process.
